The theme for the Sydney's 2018 NYE was "The Pulse of Sydney". I decided to explore this idea by leaning into the concentric circle pattern that originated in the main print design. The giant "speaker man" as we dubbed him, became the device that provided the tempo of a day in the life of Sydney, from sunrise over the water at Bondi Beach, through the daily coffee, sport with friends, sunset over the harbour, to the nightlife and finally the fireworks.
For the Calling Country projection, to contrast against the hyper saturated colour palette of the rest of the content, I chose to pull back to an almost monochromatic palette. Utilising particle systems, and basic elements of circles as water at rest, and lines of water in motion, the Calling Country explores the relationship of the Eora nation, and the Gadigal people, with the water: as something that shapes the landscape they inhabit; as a source of sustenance; a means of transport; as a border; as an intrinsic component of culture; and sadly as a harbinger of upheaval.
