The 2017 Welcome to Country pylon projections told a generational story of the connection between the Gadigal people and their country. As a grandfather and grandson paddle downriver towards the coast, knowledge, stories and history are passed down from one to other.
Taking cues from historical paintings depicting Australia’s history, I decided to approach the material as a “faux painting”: All of the elements in the animation use hand painted assets that are brought to life through animation. Despite the demanding approach and schedule the piece turned out quite well!
