Client: City of Sydney
Agency: Imagination
Role: Animation
Year: 2013
This was my first year creating the pylon projection content for Sydney’s New Years Eve celebrations, and I was incredibly excited to work with art designed by famed Australian artist and musician Reg Mombassa. The pylon projection content played through the night from 7pm through to 2am, and included welcoming messaging, sponsorship and government information, public and community service announcements, pure creative sequences, and perhaps most importantly for those celebrating around the harbour, countdown sequences that heralded in the New Year, all anchored by Reg Mombassa’s artwork. I have to admit that having my content seen by thousands of Australians (and potentially more people around the world), on such a big night was a huge thrill and privilege.
Reg provided basic character sheets and environment artwork that had to be pulled apart, coloured in and prepared for animation. I decided to tackle the project primarily in Cinema 4D because of its generally more robust character animation toolset, despite the two dimensional artwork. It meant more time was spent in setting up everything for animation, but once that was complete, the animation process was fast and flexible.
