For the 2016 New Year's Eve "Creative Expression", the City of Sydney commissioned paper artist Benja Harney, to create a sculpture to represent Sydney. Our task was to bring the scultpure to life for the Pylon Projection Show. After having worked exclusively with computer animation for all of my previous New Years content, it was exciting and daunting to work with a physical object. After considering several approaches, I decided to create a "day in the life" of the sculpture. This allowed me to project animations onto the surface of the sculpture during the night sequence and bring an extra facet to the expression. The pieces of the sculpture were also reconfigured into different arrangements for the rest of the pylon content for the evening.
For the Welcome to Country, Indigenous consultant Rhoda Roberts conceived an idea around Song Lines, or Dreaming Tracks, which are Indigenous stories that contained both directions for travellers across the country, but also important stories of Aboriginal culture and knowledge. The songlines crisscross the country, connecting all people. We were interested in taking the Welcome To Country in a direction away from traditional, conservative depictions of Aboriginal culture and created a narrative and visual style based around a mesh that connects everything, forming the structure from which all the imagery, knowledge and story is created.
I was very happy with how both of these critical pieces of content turned out and proud to once again be a part of the New Year's Eve celebrations.
